A quick, differentiated homework solution!

Homework always seems to be a hot topic among educators. Whether you love it or hate it, some teachers are required to administer homework. Some parents just want homework. Heck, some kids even beg for homework!

Something I noticed is that the further I got into the school year, the more I dreaded putting together homework. PLUS, I always hated how many pages of copies those homework packets required. I desperately wanted a way to save the trees, save my time, and save my sanity while providing consistent homework for my students and their families.

This is how my homework choice board bundle was created!

5th grade homework

I haven't created a full year of boards quite yet but they are IN PROGRESS and the price will go up as soon as it is complete! We do a few different projects throughout the year (science fair projects, JA BizTown, etc) that shortened my personal choice board creating requirements so I am working on adding in the final choice boards to make this a complete set!

My students LOVED this homework last year! All boards have been tried out by fifth graders and are student and parent approved. The boards contain a healthy mix of activities for all student preferences and learning levels.

5th grade homework

Currently, the Homework Choice Boards contain questions pertaining to:
-Visualizing while Reading
-Writing with Colorful Language
-Narrative Writing
-Opinion Writing
-Persuasive Writing
-Multiplying by Powers of 10
-Adding Fractions
-Subtracting Fractions
-Native American Cultural Regions
-Early Explorers
-States of Matter
-Forces and Motion

5th grade homework

Some ideas for implementation:
  1. Suggest that parents get to pick one square and the student picks the rest. This will help with students avoiding their areas of need.
  2. Preselect the one required square yourself for students. This can be done on a student-by-student basis or all students can have the same requirement.
  3. Have students use their own paper at home to decrease paper usage at school.
  4. Have students type their work, scan images, etc. and submit their work digitally.

5th grade homework

These choice boards totally saved my sanity last year and I hope they are also helpful for you as you embark on a new school year! Please feel free to leave feedback on the product below or ask me any questions!

Sun, Moon, Earth NGSS Aligned Flip Book for 5th Grade

I feel like I'm constantly searching for high-quality, NGSS aligned science content for my classroom. We're going to start taking the new NGSS aligned science test next year and I've been (slowly) trying to get myself ready for the change next year.

I have two resources in my store thus far for the NGSS standards. These resources are quite difficult to make because the NGSS standards require significant interpretation and analysis. However, I have finally finished my second product. Along with my energy flow/ecosystems mini book, I now have a sun, moon, earth flip book.

This flip book covers each major topic addressed in NGSS. The bottom part of the flip book contains text on the topic. I love using this as a close read type activity. We work through unknown vocabulary and take notes on our learning as we read.

The upper flap has visual illustrations of the content. This is helpful for supporting ELD students and struggling readers in understanding the content in the text.

The end of the book contains response activities for the students to complete. They can all be completed at the end as a form of assessment or they can be completed as you read to aid in comprehension and developing strong constructed responses. All responses are open-ended because I believe that students need ample opportunities to write and explain their thinking.

I am so excited about this new(er) addition to my store and I can't wait to put out more NGSS aligned flip books for you! I'd love to know what topics you're interested in so feel free to leave them in the comments!

Quadrilateral Flip Book - Make Math Easy!

I've been obsessing over flip books lately! I've created at least 8 new flip books in the past 2 months and this quadrilateral flip book is one of my favorites.

The hierarchy of 2D shapes (quadrilaterals specifically) always seem to confuse my students. They're pretty good with understanding characteristics of individual shapes but they have a hard time seeing how they all fit together into a hierarchy of similar attributes.

I love how this flip book keeps the student focused on the hierarchy of shapes by laying it out sequentially on the flaps. It also helps students as they go through the book because they can understand how the new shape is connected to the shape we learned about on the previous page.

I have found that this book also helps students keep track of all of their learning in one place. Sometimes they just need something easy to refer to. I love flip books because they're great at keeping everything in one spot for my students, making it more likely that students will review and access their prior learning.

The students love being able to write on the shapes in this book. We measure each shapes sides for practice with rulers. We also measure all of the angles in each shape as an exploration into shape attributes as well as for additional practice with protractors.

These flip books are really engaging and the students love working in them!

Stay Engaged with St. Patrick's Day Math Scoots!

I love, love, love math scoots! In fact, I seriously can't get enough of them. My students are fans as well. My class this year is very movement oriented and they are the best behaved when they have the chance to move around the classroom during lessons. As you can see...scoot games are totally necessary in my room!

I wanted to put together something that helped my students review early math skills, incorporate movement, and spice things up with a fun theme. I came up with some place value scoots with an adorable St. Patrick's Day theme.

These scoot games are loaded with fun St. Patrick's Day graphics like gold coins, horseshoes, pots of gold, etc. One game covers comparing and ordering decimals. The other game covers rounding decimals. Both of these skills need consistent review in my classroom.

I hope to make a digital version of these as well like I did with my Valentine's Day Scoot activity. Until then, the printables are up and ready to use! I hope you have fun with these in your classroom!

Brand New Valentine's Day Math Products!

I stowed away for a bit this weekend to create some new Valentine's Day products just in time for the holiday fun. Please tell me that I'm not the only one who loves Valentine's Day?!

I created two versions of the same Valentine's Day Scoot game and they're both 50% off for the first 24 hours! There's a black and white printable option. This option is easy to prep and print. The second option is a digital file for Google Drive or Google Classroom. I love this version because it's full color and the students love using computers. I also use the differentiation option in Google Classroom to pick and choose which slides each student gets.

The digital version has 40 slides like the one above with adding and subtracting mixed numbers and fractions. Use some. Use them all. You choose!

The printable version has the same questions but they're in an easy to print, black and white format. They can be colored in or left as black line art.

Half Off at Half Time Sale! Don't Miss It!!

I am linking up with tons of great sellers on TpT today to offer you half off deals at half time! Today only, all FOUR of my featured resources are on sale for HALF OFF! I made sure to pick the best of the best for you when I put this offer together!

Here's what you can find for half off today in my store!

This Google Drive unit is packed with awesome resources for teaching the Revolutionary War. Don't have Google Classroom? No problem. You can print the pages. I do have a black and white version in my store as well that is not on sale today. This resource has read alouds for every text, interactive activities, and tons of great information. Plus, everything is more fun on the computer, right?

My Mini Flip Fraction Bundle contains all FIVE of my fraction flip books. These flip books will make teaching fractions a BREEZE! You'll find flip books for adding fractions, subtracting fractions without regrouping, subtracting fractions with regrouping, multiplying fractions and dividing fractions. The flip books print to a half page and are double sided, making this an awesome paper saver!

Okay, maybe I have a thing with math. This flip book is great for introducing quadrilaterals and gives students a place to take notes as they learn about each shape: trapezoid, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus and square. There are shapes to measure the sides and angles and the book makes the lessons so much fun!

Keeping up with my flip book theme, the last resource is my newest resource! I just finished it yesterday. This resource is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and covers the important pieces of information that students should understand in Earth Science. There are visual models, grade-level text and written response activities for students to practice using text-based responses. This is jam packed with information and perfect for 5th graders!

So...what thing are you most looking forward to during the #halfoffathalftime or #halfoffhalftime sale?

To find all of the other great resources, just type in #halfoffhalftime and #halfoffathalftime in the TpT search bar!

8 Reasons Why I Love Selling LuLaRoe

I've been a LuLaRoe retailer for 7 months now. It's hard to believe that it has already been that long! You know what people always say...time flies when you're having fun! That couldn't be any more true when applied to my LuLaRoe journey. I am #teamlularoe all day, every day.

Wondering what's so great about it? Let me count the ways....

1) You always have the best wardrobe. Consider this for a minute, those unicorns you're hunting...we get to keep them. That's not to say that every retailer keeps all of the unicorns. We're very generous and totally not selfish. However, when we pull out that "perfect for me" piece, it does go into our closet. All those hours spent hunting...not any more! For example, I've been needing a solid black Classic Tee for months. I didn't hunt for it. I just waited and the LuLaRoe warehouse delivered. One showed up in my box. No wild search, no time-stamp battles, it was just right there for me!

2) You never have to worry about being too busy to wash laundry. Those days are long gone for me. Of course, I do try to keep up with it. However, when I fail, my LuLaRoe inventory is always there to lend me a new outfit in times of need. The saying "I have nothing to wear" will never be spoken in your house again. Trust me.

3) Surprise date night? No problem. If you don't already own the perfect outfit, there's one waiting for you. I can guarantee it!

4) Versatility. Each piece is incredibly versatile. This makes packing a breeze. You can throw a Mimi into your suitcase and you have a shawl, a scarf, a sweater, a blanket for the airplane...etc. You can wear that Julia alone, then you can put it under a Cassie for a brand new spin. The styling possibilities are endless and make travel wear so much easier.

5) The clothes are comfortable. Like...really, REALLY comfortable. I am a full-time teacher on top of selling LuLaRoe and I have never been so comfortable in my work clothes. I'll spend the day in the classroom and then come home and work on LuLaRoe shipping and photography without ever having to change.

6) The business fits MY life. Thursdays are long days for me. I don't have to do a single second of work on a Thursday if I don't want to. Taking a long trip out of the state/country/etc? You don't have to work at all. Your inventory will be here when you get back and there's nothing and nobody telling you that you have to sell. It's done on your time and according to your needs. Nobody decides when you have to order, what to order, etc. I needed that and I can promise you that around report card time, I'm not selling much but it's there when I'm ready to push again.

7) Make as much as you need to when you need to! Have a large expense all of a sudden or want to save for a trip? LuLaRoe is a life-saver. I've been able to do so many things that were never possible before LuLaRoe because I can book more pop-ups, hold more online sales, and really put as much effort into my business as I need to in order to make my goals happen. LuLaRoe is there for you...you're not working for LuLaRoe. If you need it, it delivers.

8) Holiday and birthday gifts are a breeze...for females at least. I always have the perfect thing to gift my friends and family members. I love picking outfits for them and saving them for gifts. Plus, who isn't going to love getting free LuLaRoe. We're both happier people for it!

February Fun & A Free Word Search

Hey there friends!

I'm so excited about the fact that it's almost February. February is one of my favorite times during the school year for a few reasons.

1) Valentine's Day is such a fun school holiday. I love doing themed ELA & Math projects throughout the day. We have investigations, learn about candy and create fraction monsters. It's a blast.
2) February leads us into the fun things that come later on like our Right Brain art initiative (I can't wait to make our mural this year) and our architect residency (where we'll learn all about sustainability and design buildings for the future.
3) My LuLaRoe business starts to transition into spring sales and I get to order tons more skirts and dresses. Goodbye leggings and warm fuzzy clothing....eventually. ;)
4) State testing hasn't started and the atmosphere is still light and fun. I wish it could stay that way forever.

As soon as my mind starting focusing on February, I remembered some fun freebies that I have in my store. I wanted to share them with you because I thought that you might love all the holiday fun just as much as I do.

Here's what you can find in my store for free:

Factor practice! For me, Valentine's Day means we're in the thick of our fraction units. I still want my students to practice their fraction skills while they're having fun. I put together some heart-themed pages that get students thinking about factors and multiples in relationship to fractions. No prep, ready to go, easy to use!

Valentine's Day notes for students and staff. These notes have free homework passes for students and a thank you note for staff members. I like to spread the love on Valentine's Day and let members of my staff know how much I appreciate them. Plus, a free homework pass goes a lot further than candy. It's free and the students totally appreciate it.

Lastly, a blog-reader's freebie! This one isn't available in my store. It's only here for people who read my blog. I put together a quick (but cute) Valentine's Day word search. I love word searches and so do my students. This can be done during the madness called "passing out Valentine's", during morning work, etc. Ready to go, no prep. Print in color or black and white.

I hope these free resources help bring a little fun into your hectic schedule. Now, let me know in the comments what your favorite thing to do is during the month of February!
